Top Attractions in Agra

Agra needs no introduction. This Uttar Pradesh city on the banks of the Yamuna is home to the Taj Mahal and a concentration of Mughal-era monuments that few cities anywhere can match. It sits about 200 km south of Delhi and draws millions of visitors each year, yet there is still more to see here than most single-day visitors manage.

  • Taj Mahal: The white marble mausoleum built by Shah Jahan for Mumtaz Mahal is the single most visited monument in India and one of the most recognised buildings on earth. The scale, the symmetry, and the way the marble changes colour with the light are things photographs cannot fully capture. Early morning visits, right at gate opening, offer the least crowded experience.
  • Agra Fort: This massive red sandstone fort sits 2.5 km from the Taj and served as the main residence of the Mughal emperors until the capital moved to Delhi. The Diwan-i-Am, Diwan-i-Khas, Jahangir’s Palace, and the Musamman Burj (where Shah Jahan spent his last years looking at the Taj) are all inside. A full tour of the fort takes 2 to 3 hours.
  • Fatehpur Sikri: About 37 km from Agra, this abandoned Mughal capital built by Akbar is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Buland Darwaza (one of the tallest gateways in the world), the Panch Mahal, and the tomb of Salim Chishti are the main draws. The complex is vast and needs at least half a day.
  • Itimad-ud-Daulah’s Tomb: Often called the “Baby Taj,” this tomb of Mirza Ghiyas Beg is a smaller, more intimate Mughal monument with exquisite marble inlay work that predates the Taj Mahal. The garden setting along the Yamuna is calmer than the Taj crowds, and the craftsmanship rewards a close look.
  • Mehtab Bagh: This garden across the Yamuna directly behind the Taj Mahal offers the most famous sunset view of the monument. The garden itself is a restored Mughal charbagh, and the view from here, with the Taj reflected in the river on still evenings, is something you carry with you long after you leave.

Best Time to Visit: October to March offers mild weather and clear skies. Avoid April to June, when the heat is extreme and the monument grounds are punishing in the afternoon sun.

Getting There: Agra is connected to Delhi by the Yamuna Expressway (about 3 hours by road), the Gatimaan Express (under 2 hours by train), and regular bus services. The city has its own railway station (Agra Cantt) with trains to most major Indian cities.

Agra is more than the Taj Mahal, but the Taj is reason enough. Everything else in the city adds layers to a story that runs across 400 years of Mughal rule.

Things to Do in Agra

Agra offers more than monument-hopping. The food, the crafts, and the old-city lanes add a lived-in dimension that balances the grand Mughal architecture.

  • Watch Sunrise at the Taj Mahal: The gates open at 6 AM, and the first hour inside is the most peaceful. The marble is cool, the gardens are still dewy, and the crowd has not yet formed. Sunrise light turns the dome a pale pink before it settles into white. It is worth waking up early for.
  • Walk Through the Sadar Bazaar and Kinari Bazaar: The old-city markets near the Jama Masjid are packed with marble handicrafts, leather goods, and zari-work embroidery. The lanes are narrow and full of energy, and the prices are lower than the shops near the Taj gate. Bargaining is expected.
  • Eat Agra’s Famous Petha: Petha, a translucent sweet made from ash gourd, is Agra’s signature sweet. Panchhi Petha and other old shops along the main road sell dozens of flavours, from plain to paan to chocolate. Buy it fresh from the counter rather than the pre-packed boxes for the best texture.
  • Visit Akbar’s Tomb at Sikandra: About 10 km from the city centre, this tomb of Emperor Akbar is a grand complex with a five-storey gateway and a large garden inhabited by deer and langurs. The design combines Islamic, Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain elements, reflecting Akbar’s syncretic philosophy. It is far less crowded than the Taj or the Fort.
  • Take a Boat Ride on the Yamuna Behind the Taj: Local boatmen offer short rides on the Yamuna from the ghats behind the Taj Mahal. The view of the monument from the river, framed by the Mehtab Bagh on one side and the fort on the other, is a perspective that most visitors miss entirely.

Tip: Buy a composite ticket from the ASI office at any major monument. It covers the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, Fatehpur Sikri, Itimad-ud-Daulah, and Akbar’s Tomb at a discounted rate and is valid for one day.

Note: The Taj Mahal is closed every Friday for prayers. Plan your visit on any other day of the week, and carry only essential items as security checks at the entrance are thorough.

Agra has been welcoming visitors for centuries, and it knows how to deliver. Give it more than a half-day, and it will give you more than just one monument in return.
