Posted by

Children’s Day always pulls us back to our childhood days when life was stress-free and the only stress in our life was to submit homework assignments tomorrow. Life was somewhat like a coloring box where you could find a variety of bright colors all tucked together. Truly the best time of our lives. To celebrate this innocent phase of our lives, we have Children’s Day which is celebrated with huge pomp and shown annually in every school and college. On this day, schools and colleges organize various competitions, music, and dance performances to celebrate this day. Toys, sweets, and gifts are also distributed among the children.

Children’s Day is not just about making the children feel special but it is also about ensuring that every child has the fundamental right to education. It is about making their lives and future better. Children’s Day conveys the importance of education and knowledge for every child in the nation. Here’s everything you need to know about this special occasion dedicated to children.

History of Children’s Day

Children’s Day

Children’s Day is celebrated every year on the 14th of November to honor the first Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. Children adored being in his company and they used to fondly call him “Chacha Choudhary”. While there is no definite reason as to why children addressed him “chachaji”, the admiration of children towards the loving Prime Minister is the major reason for this term. Another possible reason is that Jawaharlal Nehru had a very strong connection with Mahatma Gandhi and he treated him as an elder brother. While Gandhi was lovingly addressed as “Bapu” by the people of India, Nehru ended up being “chachaji”.

Before 1964, India used to celebrate Children’s Day on the 20th of November. After the death of our loving Prime Minister on May 27, 1964, the Indian Parliament declared the birth anniversary of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru as Children’s Day. Everyone knew that he was extremely popular among kids, so in order to make people understand his love for children, the government of India decided to declare his birthday Children’s Day.

What to learn from the character of Nehru

Nehru never discriminated against children of any religion, caste, creed, or color. For him, every child was equally precious and talented. We all need to imbibe this special quality of India’s first Prime Minister that made him ahead of everyone. Nowadays we just don’t have any time left in our lives to spend time with the children trying to understand them. Kids introduce you to a completely different outlook towards life which is somewhere missing in our lives. We need to learn something from the divine personality of Jawaharlal Nehru as he continuously interacted with children and tried to understand their perspectives and aspirations. He is one of the greatest Prime Ministers our nation was blessed with in the past.

Nehru always supported the education of his dear children. He believed that children were the actual strength of the nation and the foundation of any society. Hence, various educational and motivational programs are being implemented on this day.

Children’s Film Society by Jawaharlal Nehru

The affection of Nehru towards his dear children is very well described in the fact that he established an organization in India exclusively for children known as Children’s Film Society in the year 1955. This organization is known to create children’s films and various television shows. Some of the popular films by CFS include Nani Teri Morni, SCHOOL CHALEGA…?, Ishu, Likee, Pinti Ka Sabun, KAPHAL – Wild Berries, The Cake Story, Yeh Hai Chakkad Bakkad Bumbe Bo, and many others.

Date of Children’s Day

Children’s Day is celebrated every year on the birthday of Jawaharlal Nehru on the 14th of November. The day marks the birth anniversary of India’s very first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. The day is also known as “Bal Diwas”.

Children’s Day was started by Reverend Dr. Charles Leonard in the year 1957. Although Children’s Day is celebrated on a global level on June 1 by several nations, Universal Children’s Day occurs on November 20.

Significance of Children’s Day

We all must be aware of the reason why Children’s Day is celebrated across India on the fourteenth of November. Here are some of the major reasons for the significance of Children’s Day in India.

Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was the biggest supporter of children’s rights, care, and education. “The children of today will make the India of tomorrow. The way we bring them up will determine the future of the country”. These words of Nehru are engraved with golden letters in history. It clearly depicts how much he wanted his dear children to take education as it builds your character and prepares you for future challenges. He dedicated his whole life to supporting the fundamental rights of education among children.

The clear vision of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on the appearance of modern India was reflected in his dream of establishing solid support for the newly independent India. He constantly focused on giving education, especially to the weaker sections of society so that they can enjoy a better future.

Nehru enforced the construction of some of the major educational institutions in India such as AIIMS, IIT, and IIM. He constantly worked for his vision of what Modern India should look like. Modern India with strong pillars can only be possible if India owned a strong education system. Nehru departed from this world leaving a legacy of education for the children of India.
