Beautiful train journeys in India

Posted by

Trains are never out of fashion and have some romantic feelings about them. The feeling one receives from watching the picturesque landscapes pass by as the rail glides along the iron tracks is beyond words and is something the soul senses.

Many Bollywood films are shot and have settings that revolve around trains. It is such a travelling mode that has long been loved, and what’s better if it gives you some breathtaking vistas to see along the way?

In this article, we have come up with such stunning beautiful train journeys in India that will give you some ideas if you’re itching for some adventure but don’t know where to begin.

1. Nilgiri Mountain Railway (Mettupalayam to Ooty)

Like the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, this train travels 46 kilometres (km) in four and a half hours and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway served as the backdrop for this famous dance piece, “Chaiyya Chaiyya,” a song with Shahrukh and Malaika dancing on the roof of a train. A trip on the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, which departs from Mettupalayam, is unquestionably one of the most captivating ways to get to scenic locations like Ooty and Coonor. Put your hand out the window to touch the misty clouds as you drive through meadows and forests and inhale the essence of nature as you take in the tranquil valley vistas.

2. Darjeeling toy train (New Jalpaiguri to Darjeeling)

The Darjeeling toy train moves slowly through peaceful hill towns and villages at a constant speed of 10 to 12 kmph. The little steam locomotive Darjeeling Himalayan Railway travels between New Jalpaiguri to Darjeeling over the vast tea estates. It contours around plantations and hills and is one of the most beautiful journeys you may have.

The most amazing part is when it stops for ten minutes to wind around a magnificent garden at the Batasia loop, where you may witness the most breathtaking views of the towering Kanchenjunga. Darjeeling Himalayan Railway was constructed in the 1800s and is now designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

3. Kashmir Valley Railway (Banihal to Baramulla)

The best way to discover the actual mystique of paradise and gain the closest possible understanding of the valley’s inhabitants is to travel along the Banihal-Baramulla Railway line, which runs through the centre of Kashmir Valley. The Jammu-Baramulla Rail Route, which spans 119 kilometres, is expected to be completely operational by 2022.

The trains depart from Banihal Station and enter India’s Longest Railway Tunnel (11.2 km) shortly after to pass the Pir-Panjal Range and arrive at Qazigund, where you can see the broad Kashmiri meadows where Bakarwal shepherds are leading their adorable sheep.

4. Himalayan Queen ( Delhi Sarai Rohilla- Kalka)

The Himalayan Queen train travels through over a hundred tunnels and about a thousand turns, beginning in Kalka at the edge of Punjab. This train has evolved from what first started as a way to assist the English soldiers in getting to the nation’s summer capital, Shimla. The diminutive meter-gauge train arrives at the lovely Shimla railway station. Views of gorgeous flowers and apple orchards will fascinate you along the journey, and you will get to experience the excitement of being in the lap of the Himalayas as the train crosses tiny bridges built over joyously rushing streams of water.

5. Poorna Express (Pune To Ernakulam)

The Poorna express runs between Pune and Ernakulam which has a fantastic route with beautiful sceneries. The trail travels through the Deccan plains at night for more than 32 hours and 31 stops, but the magic happens when it crosses the Belgaum crossroads in the morning. You may witness many lovely waterfalls scattered throughout the Western Ghat Mountains as you wind your way through them. Also, the magnificent Dudhsagar Falls, situated on the border between Goa and Karnataka, will leave you open-mouthed.

6. (Vasco Da Gama – Londa)

This mesmerising rail route will take you through the most significant parts of the Konkan Coast and the Western Ghats Mountains, passing through deep woods, little towns, foaming waterfalls, mysterious tunnels, and beautiful green fields. At the boundary of Goa and Karnataka, Dudhsagar, India’s tallest waterfall, is the route’s high point, an eye treat.
